The invention of turbo codes, first published in 1993, is a landmark event in information
theory and telecommunication engineering. The inventors Claude Berrou, Alain
Glavieux, and Punya Thitimajshima, are all from Télécom Bretagne (former ENST
Bretagne), France.

Turbo codes are of far-reaching theoretical significance because they were the first family
of practical codes to closely approach the theoretical limits of communication channels.
They have also revolutionary impact on practical systems. For example, turbo codes are
used in both 3G and 4G mobile communication systems worldwide and in deep-space
satellite communications. The advent of Turbo codes also triggered a sequence of
important events in communication and signal processing, such LDPC codes, iterative
multi-user detection and, more recently, AMP family algorithms. The inventors of turbo
codes received numerous awards, including

  • the SEE Ampère Medal (1997),
  • the Golden Jubilee Award for Technological Innovation of IEEE Information Theory
    Society (1998),
  • the IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal (2003),
  • the French Grand Prix France Télécom of Académie des sciences (2005),
  • the Marconi Prize (2005).

ISTC is a series of conferences dedicated to modern coding theory and iterative
processing techniques. The first few ISTC conferences were held at Brest, France, that is
the birth place of turbo codes. The venues of ISTC moved to several European cities
since 2006, but still returned to Brest from time to time. Since 2006, ISTC has become a
biannual event. The following is the list of years and cities of the past nine ISTC
conferences.

1st symposium – 1997: Brest France
2nd symposium – 2000: Brest France
3rd symposium – 2003: Brest France
4th symposium – 2006: Munich Germany
5th symposium – 2008: Lausanne Switzerland
6th symposium – 2010: Brest France
7th symposium – 2012: Gothenburg Sweden
8th symposium – 2014: Bremen Germany
9th symposium – 2016: Brest France

It was decided at Brest, France, in October 2016 that the 10 th ISTC will be held in Hong
Kong in December 2018. It will be the first time that ISTC is held outside Europe.
